The window will receive maximum sunshine.
A South-Facing window is preferred
You rotate the plants to prevent them from becoming leggy and all parts of the plant receive sunshine. Tuscan Baby Leaf Kale grows in 25 days. But wouldn’t it be nice to have a sunporch, sunroom, bay window - something larger that allows natural light to come into the home.
In the Past (1940s) — Why did homes have Sunrooms?
Pre-1950s — Sunrooms provided Health Benefits, Increased Living Space, and “ENERGY EFFICIENCY” because sunrooms used Natural Sunlight and the Warmth from the sunlight. Sunrooms allowed owners to grow plants and avoid harsh outdoor weather. The sunrooms were also relaxed living areas for the owners. Earlier homes had formal guest parlor rooms for company. Health Benefits - imagine going into the sunroom and opening a window providing CO2 for the plants and fresh air for the residents! During the summer months people used sunrooms as “sleeping rooms” to allow the owners to sleep in the cool night air. Years ago sunrooms were seen as Solar Collectors allowing the sunshine to heat up the space during colder weather.
TODAY’S TECHNOLOGY
After the invention of “AIR CONDITIONERS” (heat pumps - hot and cold temps) the percention of sunrooms was viewed differently. People wanted to cool the home without loss of cool air and they wanted to keep their power bills lower. There has been a movement towards living with insulated windows, not much fresh air circulation, and not much sunshine entering the homes. It is possible to have an indoor garden with small grow lights. Use any available window - preferably facing South. Purchase easy to grow veggie seeds - mustard greens, Bok Choy, Kale, Spinach.
