How long does Rocky have the grow lights on his Secret Garden plants
This depends on what size leaf you want to harvest your plants. Baby leaf, Medium leaf or Full Maturity. The indoor system Rocky is using isn’t conducive to Full Maturity leaf stage that you would get in an outdoor garden. Rock likes Baby leaf to just under medium size leaves. The small the leaves the more tender and nutritious. Also you conserve water growing to baby leaf stage and you can grow a variety of plants in a small space. A general rule for a kale plant is 10 hrs. However, leaving a grow light on for 10 hrs even at 25 watts will increase your electric bill. Try to place your grow shelf garden beside a window, preferably a southwest facing window to take advantage of the sunshine. Rocky has had success with his indoor garden growing under grow lights for 7 to 9 hrs.
How much time does Rocky keep his plants in the dark?
Plants need to rest. Average time in the dark is 6-10 hrs. During this time the plants process through essential biological events. Plants grow in the daylight through photosynthesis. During the night time they go through processes that support their growth and health - Respiration, Sugar Transport and Growth and Repair. Refer to the POST - “What Plants Do at Night”
