INTERESSTING FACT —

First Documentation of a greenhouse was Early Roman Times

  • Purpose: To provide Emperor Tiberius with a daily supply of cucumbers, a luxury not possible during Rome's winter.

  • Construction: The first "greenhouses" were essentially structures with stone walls for insulation and transparent ceilings made of mica, a transparent mineral.

  • Innovation: Another early method involved growing plants on carts that could be wheeled into the sunlight as the Sun moved across the sky.

Emperor Tiberius had an Indoor Garden (greenhouses) and a Moveable Garden - moveable carts chasing the daylight.

If you’re transitioning from an outdoor garden to an Indoor Garden and you want to grow some of the larger vegetables - add a moveable garden, if possible - during the warm months.

A life of outdoor gardening was great. If you are getting older, moving from a home with a garden in the back yard into a patio home or - a home with an HOA — or you’re living in an apartment —-let’s talk about the transition to an indoor garden 365, and possibly adding a moveable garden for the larger crops if you have a garage or porch you can pull the moveable garden into at night. A small red wagon filled with plants looks like an outside decorative ornament. (be creative with your home, apartment entrance, etc.)

A grow season of 365 days

Control of the light and humidity

If your living situation allows you to add a moveable garden, then use the sun and good weather during the warm summer months to grow outside using a moveable garden to grow the larger crops.

Indoors grow the cherry tomatoes —

On the Moveable Garden cart grow the larger tomato varieties

During the transition seasons (fall and spring), use a wheeled garden cart to capture the shorter daylight hours. Move the cart around to keep it in the sunshine.

A Moveable Garden is very adaptable depending on your grow zone. Southern parts of the US do not have bitter cold winter temperatures and during the occasional cold snap pull the garden into the garage or any suitable roofed shelter.

MOVEABLE GARDEN vs. LARGER, FIXED IN PLACE, CONTAINER GARDENS -

Container Gardens are heavy and fixed in place - on a patio or beside the front door entrance. The containers get a limited amount of sunshine.

Moveable Garden - the biggest advantage is the ability to capture sunshine almost all day long by moving the garden cart. (perfect for the retiree who enjoyed outdoor gardening)

Use the moveable garden during the warm months. Produce Tomatoes and Peppers and some turnips or radish, even a bucket of small potatoes

KEEP YOUR INDOOR GARDEN PRODUCING 365 DAYS A YEAR. The hot months, at the end of summer are not suitable for growing fresh leafy greens. Grow the leafy greens all year indoors. Grow the larger root veggies during the summer on the moveable garden. (Grow the small varieties of root veggies indoors) Renee’s Garden has a “baby turnip” variety that can be grown indoors.

SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MOVEABLE GARDEN —

PEPPERS - Large Bell Peppers 68-70 days to FULL maturity (save the tender small sweet and hot peppers for the indoor garden)

TOMATOES - Try Renee’s Garden Heirloom Tangerine Tomatoes - “heavy yields all season long” (orange, sweet and juicy) (Cherry Tomatoes are better suited for the indoor garden)

TURNIPS - Larger size varieties (A small Baby Turnip can be grown indoors)

CARROTS - Larger size varieties (The mini carrots are best suited for the indoor garden)

If possible grow with both methods - Indoors and Outdoors with the moveable garden -

Happy Gardening.
